Sony offers record annual financial results despite the disappointing performance of the PS5

After the big figures published by Nintendo this week, make way for those of PlayStation. The Japanese firm is doing very well, despite a few small drops, and above all, a missed objective for this dear PS5 .

And we will obviously start with the lackluster performance of Sony's latest console. During the fourth quarter of the fiscal year that ended March 31, 2022, the Japanese brand shipped 2 million PS5s. This represents a total of 11.5 million units for the full fiscal year, where PlayStation expected to reach 14.8 million shipments worldwide. Of course, issues related to available inventory weighed heavily on these results. Since its release, the PlayStation 5 has sold 19.2 million copies.

But Sony Interactive Entertainment is doing well

Thus, the PS5 does less well than the Wii (24.5 million), than the PS4 (22.5 million) and than the Switch (19.7 million) over a period equivalent to their respective era. However, this slight underperformance had no impact on Sony's profits. Indeed, the manufacturer achieved the best fiscal year in its history with 19.8 billion euros in sales and 2.5 billion euros in profit.

For its part, the PlayStation Plus is experiencing a small decline with 47.4 million subscribed users, against 47.6 million over the same period during the previous fiscal year. Sony has also sold more than 300 million games, of which 14.5 million were developed by its own studios. This represents the second best total in history for the firm.
