The Witness fue el séptimo juego lanzado por los pioneros de la ficción interactiva Infocom.El personaje del jugador es un detective que ha sido convocado a la oficina de Cabeza Plana, California, del Sr. Linder, un millonario. Linder teme que su vida esté en peligro... y efectivamente, mientras está sentado en su despacho con el jugador, es asesinado ante los ojos del jugador. El jugador debe entonces resolver el asesinato.
