World of Warcraft

Intent on settling the arid region of Durotar, Thrall's new Horde expanded its ranks, inviting the undead Forsaken to join orcs, tauren, and trolls. Meanwhile, dwarves, gnomes and the ancient night elves pledged their loyalties to a reinvigorated Alliance, guided by the human kingdom of Stormwind. After Stormwind's king, Varian Wrynn, mysteriously disappeared, Highlord Bolvar Fordragon served as Regent but his service was marred by the manipulations and mind control of the black dragon Onyxia, who ruled in disguise as a human noblewoman. As heroes investigated Onyxia's manipulations, ancient foes surfaced in lands throughout the world to menace Horde and Alliance alike.

Harassment at Activision Blizzard: an $18 million settlement

The court approved the payment of $18 million by Activision Blizzard to settle one of its sexual harassment cases. A decision that has come under fire.

For many months, Activision Blizzard has been sued for acts of discrimination and sexual harassment. The company was notably targeted by the American Commission for Equal Employment Opportunities (EEOC, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission). She then accused the publisher of having "favored a sexist policy which allows harassment and income inequalities to persist" . The two parties had agreed to settle this amicably and the transaction has just been validated by a judge.

An insufficient first victory

Last September, Activision Blizzard committed to buildingan $18 million fund to compensate the victims, provided the lawsuit is dropped. As reported by The Washington Post , Federal Judge Dale Fisher has approved this deal between the publisher and the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission . Victims in post during the period from September 1, 2016 to March 29, 2022 are eligible for compensation. On the other hand, the employees concerned are prohibited from suing Activision Blizzard for facts covered by the agreement.

The Fair Employment and Housing Department had opposed the settlement, arguing that a successful outcome would prejudice its lawsuit. The DFEH is indeed suing Activision Blizzard for "its inability to manage the problems of discrimination and sexual harassment" . Two problems arise. On the one hand, the amount estimated too low. On the other hand, victims who are part of the agreement with the EEOC cannot appear in the trial initiated by the DFEH.

Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, reacts to the decision

Bobby Kotick, who is still the CEO of Activision Blizzard until his departure , said:

Our goal is to make Activision Blizzard a model for the industry . And we will continue to focus on eliminating harassment and discrimination in our workplace. Court approval of this agreement is an important step in ensuring that our employees have avenues of redress if they have experienced any form of harassment or retaliation.
