Last August, many sponsors withdrew their support for Activision Blizzard's e-sports leagues in light of the sexual harassment and discrimination allegations against the American giant. And with only two months to go until the new Overwatch League season... no major sponsors on the horizon.
A complicated season launch
For both Activision Blizzard and Overwatch, the upcoming fifth season of the Overwatch League is crucial. The game has been moribund for more than a year, and communication around Overwatch 2 is finally picking up. The anticipated sequel will have a closed beta on April 26, with a multiplayer-only beta, and will kick off the new Overwatch League season in early May.
But while fans of Blizzard's hit title will most likely be in attendance, that's not the case for the competition's financial engine: its sponsors. Since the investigations launched this summer against the American giant, no major sponsor is willing to open its doors. T-Mobile, Coca-Cola, Kellogg's and State Farm have long since cut ties with Activision Blizzard, and no major sponsor has been willing to associate its name with the company's e-sports leagues.
Overwatch League boss Sean Miller was reassuring (without much conviction), saying: "Our plans for the season have been in the works for some time, and we're looking to develop them further with, obviously, any partner past or present.
