Battlefield 1's Story: A Gritty Anthology of World War I

The single-player campaign of Battlefield 1 departs from a traditional linear narrative, instead presenting a collection of five "War Stories," each offering a poignant and personal glimpse into the global conflict of World War I from different perspectives. Preceded by a harrowing prologue, these standalone tales transport players to various theaters of the war, emphasizing the human cost and individual heroism amidst the unprecedented brutality of the Great War.

Storm of Steel: A Brutal Introduction

The campaign opens with "Storm of Steel," a prologue that immediately sets a grim and unflinching tone. Players are thrust into the boots of various members of the Harlem Hellfighters, an African-American infantry regiment, during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in 1918. The narrative uniquely frames the futility and chaos of trench warfare by having the player's perspective shift to another soldier upon death, underscoring the high casualty rates and the overwhelming nature of the conflict. This introductory chapter serves not as a tale of a single hero, but as a visceral and sobering depiction of the brutal reality faced by soldiers on the front lines. The prologue concludes with a tense standoff between a lone Hellfighter and a German stormtrooper, where both, exhausted and surrounded by the dead, lower their weapons in a moment of shared humanity.

Through Mud and Blood: The Iron Behemoth

Set during the Battle of Cambrai in 1917, "Through Mud and Blood" follows the crew of a British Mark V tank named "Black Bess." Players take on the role of Danny Edwards, a young and inexperienced former chauffeur assigned as the tank's driver. The story explores the dynamics within the tank crew as they navigate the treacherous and mud-soaked battlefields of France. The crew, led by the cynical Commander Townsend, must overcome both the formidable German defenses and their own internal conflicts. The narrative highlights the claustrophobic and brutal nature of early tank warfare, with the crew facing mechanical failures, intense enemy fire, and personal loss. A pivotal moment involves using a messenger pigeon to call in a risky artillery strike on their own position to escape being overrun. Ultimately, Edwards and the surviving crew members manage to push through to Cambrai, but not without significant sacrifice, showcasing the bond forged between soldiers in the crucible of war.

Friends in High Places: An Unlikely Ace

"Friends in High Places" takes to the skies and tells the story of Clyde Blackburn, a charming and roguish American gambler who impersonates a British pilot named George Rackham. This war story, set over the skies of France, chronicles Blackburn's journey from a self-serving opportunist to a genuine hero. Initially, his primary motivation is to fly a new prototype fighter plane, but he soon finds himself in the thick of aerial combat alongside his gunner, Wilson. The narrative is presented as a flashback, with an older Blackburn recounting his incredible and often embellished tales. Key missions include dogfights against German aces, protecting British bombers, and a dramatic assault on a massive German Zeppelin over London. The story explores themes of redemption and the blurred lines between truth and fabrication in the legends born from war.

Avanti Savoia: A Brother's Tale

This War Story focuses on the brutal conflict between Italian and Austro-Hungarian forces in the Alps. "Avanti Savoia!" is a tale of two brothers, Luca and Matteo, serving in the elite Italian Arditi shock troops. The story is framed as an elderly Luca recounting his experiences to his daughter. Players experience the ferocity of the mountain warfare, storming fortified positions and battling in the harsh, snowy landscapes. Clad in heavy armor and wielding a powerful machine gun, Luca fights to support his brother's unit in an assault on a heavily defended fort. The narrative builds to a tragic climax as an artillery barrage triggers an avalanche, and Luca's search for his brother in the aftermath forms the emotional core of this brief but impactful story.

The Runner: The Gallipoli Campaign

"The Runner" shifts the focus to the Gallipoli Campaign, following the story of Frederick Bishop, a celebrated Australian ANZAC runner. Bishop is tasked with carrying vital messages across the treacherous and heavily defended Ottoman front lines. The story introduces a young and naive soldier named Jack Foster, who looks up to Bishop as a hero. Bishop, however, is a seasoned and weary veteran who understands the brutal realities of the war. The narrative explores themes of mentorship and sacrifice as Bishop takes Foster under his wing. The gameplay emphasizes stealth and quick, decisive action as players navigate the dangerous terrain. The story culminates in Bishop's heroic sacrifice to protect a British warship and save countless lives, leaving a lasting impact on the young soldier he mentored.

Nothing is Written: The Arabian Desert

The final War Story, "Nothing is Written," takes players to the vast deserts of the Middle East, where Arab tribes are rebelling against the Ottoman Empire. Players assume the role of Zara Ghufran, a Bedouin warrior fighting alongside the legendary T.E. Lawrence, also known as Lawrence of Arabia. The story revolves around a mission to sabotage a heavily armored Ottoman train, the "Canavar." Zara utilizes her knowledge of the desert and guerrilla warfare tactics to disrupt Ottoman operations, including assassinating key commanders and gathering intelligence. The narrative emphasizes player freedom, allowing for different approaches to missions, from stealthy infiltration to all-out assaults. The climax involves a thrilling final confrontation with the armored train, showcasing the ingenuity and determination of the Bedouin rebels against a technologically superior foe.

Already a release window for the next Battlefield?

We all know the song… Battlefield 2042 will undoubtedly have been a semi-failure for Electronic Arts. However, the American publisher will not give up its favorite license and a new opus is probably already in the pipeline.

Since its controversial launch, Battlefield 2042 has failed to recover. It must be said that new content is struggling to arrive and that bugs have long deteriorated the gaming experience. So much so that at present, DICE's FPS is struggling to reach 2000 simultaneous players on Steam . During a conference dedicated to the announcement of the company's financial results, the boss of EA spoke about it.

The war is not lost yet!

During this interview, Andrew Wilson reiterated his confidence in the saga. He explains adopting "  a long-term vision  " for the series which will not stop with Battlefield 2042 . Better still, according to insider Tom Henderson, a new opus has been in development “  for some time  ”. And if Wilson had initially expressed his desire to launch this new episode from 2023, this information would no longer be really relevant.

Because according to sources contacted by Henderson, the next Battlefield will probably not be released before 2024. A decision that seems quite logical since the organization chart of DICE was heavily turned upside down after the launch of Battlefield 2042 .
